Attributed to John Riley (British, 1646-1691) Portrait of a man, purportedly John Bunyan Unsigned, inscribed and dated "Aetatis Suae 71/1683" u. l., identified in a handwritten affixed to the reverse, attributed on a presentation plaque. Oil on canvas, 30 3/8 x 25 1/8 in. (77.0 x 64.0 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, probable skinning, fine craquelure, surface grime. N.B. John Bunyan (British, 1628-1688) was a preacher and author of The Pilgrim's Progress . The note affixed to the reverse describes the sitter as dressed as a soldier of the Parliament Army and goes on to briefly describe his career.
