Theodore Earl Butler (American, 1861-1936) Train at Giverny Signed and dated "T. E. Butler '04" l.l. Oil on paperboard, 10 1/2 x 14 3/4 in. (26.8 x 37.7 cm), framed. Condition: Minor frame abrasion with losses at top edge on left. N.B. We would like to that Patrick Bertrand for his assistance cataloging this lot. The painting will be included in the Theodore Butler catalogue raisonné. According to Bertrand, Theodore Butler created a series of Impressionist paintings of the train en route from Vernon to Giverny. In a 1904 letter to his friend and fellow artist Philip Leslie Hale, Butler wrote, "I am now painting the eight o'clock train, likewise the ten o'clock train as well as the trains at three and four o'clock in the afternoon - in fact am quite a rail-road King."
