Gorham Sterling Silver Presentation Loving Cup, Providence, c. 1901, Spaulding & Co., retailer, bearing date code "AM/T(X)," the bulbous three-handled cup with a hammered surface throughout, undulating rim, and foliate handles and feet, with engraved presentation inscription to the central panel: "Presented to J.F. Deems/Sup.t of the American Locomotive Co./by the employees of the following organizations/ Boiler Makers & Iron Ship Builders Lodge 202/International Association of Machinests [sic] No. 90 & 204/International Association of Allied Mechanics 156/Iron & Brass Moulders Union No. 120/Dec. 30th 1902," ht. 18 3/4 in., approx. 213.8 troy oz. N.B. J.F. Deems was one of the most accomplished railroad officials of the day. He served as the general superintendent of the New York Central line for 11 years, a position that was regarded as "the largest and most important railroad mechanist position in the world" and twice represented the United States at the World Railway Congress in Europe. Noted as one of J.F. Deems' prize possessions in his obituary in the Burlington Hawk-eye , this loving cup was a testament to the esteem that even those in his employment felt towards him. Entirely hand-wrought, this cup was completed on June 20, 1901, by the same silversmiths that produced Gorham's Martelé line. A copy of the original work order and Samuel Hough's research on the present piece accompanies the lot.
