Édouard Manet (French, 1832-1883) Victorine Meurand en costume d'espada (L'espada) , 1862, probably printed in 1863, first state before the edition of aquatint (Guérin, 32; Harris, 35). Signed within the plate, identified on a label from Kennedy & Co., New York, affixed to the backing. Etching on laid paper with "HUDELIST" watermark, plate size 13 1/4 x 11 in. (33.5 x 27.8 cm), framed. Condition: Margins over 1 1/4 inches, white cloth tape along all edges, light-struck, soiling and pinpoint foxing (primarily to the margins), fine breaks to some fibers along the plate mark. Provenance: Descendants of the Lanier family of Indiana and New York.
