Auguste Edouart (1789-1861) Silhouette Portrait of Adelaide Cornelia Dickinson (c. 1830-1903), aged 13, standing in a landscape signed "Aug'n Edouart fecit/1843 Philadela 1843" l.l., the girl identified in an inscription on the back, full-length cut and pasted figure highlighted with faint white details, charcoal background, (minor toning, acid burn to edges), 7 1/2 x 10 3/4 in., in a modern frame. Note: An inscription on the reverse reads "Adelaide Cornelia Dickenson... (illegible)/ Age 13 Died ...(illegible) 1903/ Taken in Philadelphia when visiting Captain Lindsay/ US Marines at navy yard/ Mary L.Hillhouse named after Mary Lindsay/ His wife who was 1st cousin to A.C.D." Adelaide Cornelia Dickenson was born Adelaide Jones. She married Charles Dickenson and by him gave birth to Mary Lindsay Dickenson, who married a Mr. Hillhouse. Their daughter, Mary Hillhouse, may have inscribed these notes.
