Dawkins, 6th Kentucky Infantry, c. 1861-65, journal included hand-drawn maps on the inside front and back covers of Shiloh, Bull Run, Ft. Donelson, and the vicinity of Richmond, also includes many pages of his thoughts on events in camp and battle, including in the east; two silver-plate Moore's Patent Company No. 1 Deringer pistols, both inscribed R. C. Dawkins Col. 6th KY. Infty. ; his officer's sash; an 18kt gold pocket watch inscribed on the inside Maj, Richards C. Dawkins/6th KY. Inf. Vol./By the members of Co. B/his late command/Chattanooga Tenn./Jan . 1st 1864/Shiloh. Stone River./Chickamauga ; and personal correspondence with Dawkin's wife and other veterans after his death describing his military service, as well as all of his commissions. Provenance: By family descent to the consignor. Note: Richard C. Dawkins enlisted and became a 2nd Lieutenant on December 7, 1861, and rose through the ranks to become Colonel of the 6th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry by the end of the Civil War. In one of the letters included with this group is one written in 1812 to Dawkin's wife after he had passed away, describing the gift of the gold watch "He called his company in line and read the commission, which, vowed if accepted, would part him from his old Co., and with tears in his eyes vowed that he would rather command and be with his boys and command them alone than to be a general in the United states Army.
