Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987) Chicken 'n Dumplings , from Campbell's Soup II , 1969, edition of 250, printed by Salvatore Silkscreen Co, Inc. , New York, published by Factory Additions, New York (Feldman & Schellmann, II.58). Signed "Andy Warhol" in ink on the reverse, stamped "135/250" on the reverse. Color screenprint on paper, image size 31 15/16 x 18 7/8 in. (81.0 x 47.8 cm), framed. Condition: Unobtrusive fading, gentle cockling (primarily to lower edge), gently pressed crease to corner l.r. Provenance: From the collection of artist/designer Leander Poisson, New Hampshire. N.B. If the previous two lots typify Warhol's begins, the Campbell's Soup series demonstrates Warhol's fully realized style, portraying instantly recognizable subjects from the current culture. The subject is not from the cult of celebrity in the way Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Kennedy, or Mick Jagger (see lot 71) are. Instead a mundane but ubiquitous product - who doesn't currently have a can of Tomato or Cream of Mushroom Campbell's tucked away in a kitchen cabinet? - is made colossal and iconic. The line between advertising and art is purposefully blurred in this ultimate homage to the consumer culture of post-World War II America. The commercialism of the day is made to seem crass, and is presented with the same cheekiness of the "ready-mades" of Marcel Duchamp and his followers.
