First edition of the second book on the state of prisons and quarantining institutions in England, Ireland and Continental Europe by Howard. With 22 engraved plates (20 fold-out) and large engraved table detailing the number of individuals executed, sentenced to death or pardoned, and their crime. Two plates detached; large tear repaired to p. 195; a few small tears to plates; some brownspotting and intermittent foxing; wear to boards with evidence of water damage; bookplate and library card holder tipped to pastedowns.
