Marshall, 1838. 12mo, publisher's gilt-lettered embossed brown cloth-backed boards, spine restored and rebacked with matching modern cloth and pastedown printed spine label. First and only edition (only 500 copies printed), of this early immigrant's guide to and description of the state of Illinois. With frontispiece fold-out map of Illinois in 1838 outlined in color. The northeastern corner of the map shows the city of Chicago, with Calumet to the south, Juliet (i.e. Joliet) to the southwest, Lyons and Napiersville (i.e. Naperville) to the west, and Gros Point (i.e. Grosse Pointe) to the north. 2 pp. with previous owner's ex-libris embossed stamp; manuscript ex-libris to front pastedown; some light dampstaining to endpapers; otherwise map is in fine condition.
