First edition of this scarce account of the Pottawatomie Indian chief who fought with Tecumseh in 1812 and participated in the Black Hawk War. Manuscript ex-libris William Hicklin, Chicago, to title page. Minor wear to boards. [Tipped in:] Autographed letter signed ("N. Matson"), 2 pp., Princeton, January 19, 1878. To William Hickling (full transcription available). Matson discusses his motivations for the work, having been personally acquainted with Shaubena, and how he obtained the facts for his story. He thanks Hickling for an historical report provided.
