A large collection of approximately 45 mainly Civil War era letters (c. 1820-1860) from Chauncey Whittelsey to a certain Sarah Whittelsey and other members of the Whittelsey family, Middletown, CT. Born in 1746, Chauncey Whittelsey was the pastor the First Church of New Haven and minister of Middletown, Connecticut. Whittelsey retired from the religious life to become a commercial clothing retailer. During the Revolutionary and Civil Wars he functioned as an Army supplier to the United States Army. During his life Whittelsey served as the alderman of Middletown, representative to the Connecticut State Legislature, Collector of the Port, and deacon of the Congregational Church for twenty-three years. Whittelsey died in 1834. Together with two issues of Nos. 957 (May 27, 1783) and 963 (July 15, 1783). Hartford: Hudson and Goodwin. Chauncey Whittelsey manuscript ex-libris to both issues; some light soiling; fading to titles; chipping to edges and splits at folds; otherwise fine.
