Two Katagami Japanese stencils used for kimono patterns, silk grid over mulberry paper. Japan, 1920-1930. The stencil is produced by gluing sheets of mulberry paper and waterproofing them by coating the pages with tannin extracts from persimmons. The stencil is cut into the design and supported by silk webbing. Rice paste is applied to the stencil over selected fabric creating the design. The rice paste washes away easily from the stencil allowing for reuse.
