Malyavin' lower right; with stamp of the Imperial Academy of Arts lower right and date lower right LOT NOTES: Upon his return to Russia following a six-year stay in Greece where he had been studying icon painting, Filipp Maliavin entered the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. Maliavin was enrolled at the academy from 1892-1894. This figural study was comlpeted by Maliavin as part of the academic curriculum and was submitted by the artist as an exam piece in 1893. After the successful completion of the core curriculum at the Imperial Academy Maliavin went on to study in the studio of Ilya Repin.
