The kingdom of Rohan revolved around its relationship with the horse and its people were renowned both as skilled horseman and warriors, none more so than their seventeenth King, Theoden who was a mighty swordsman before he fell under the evil spell of Saruman and his servant Wormtongue. Exorcized by Gandalf the White of Saruman’s influence, it was only when Theoden had his faithful sword Herugrim returned to him that he truly reclaimed his rightful place as ruler of the horse lords. Elegant in its simplicity, it was similar to a standard Rohan sword both in shape and design, featuring the iconic Rohan motif of intertwined horses heads on the hilt but more ornate and constructed of finer materials as befits the sword of generations of Rohan royalty. This lightweight prop version of Herugrim was created by the skilled craftsman at Weta Workshop during the production of The Lord of the Rings trilogy (New Line Cinema, 2001, 2002, 2003). The resin hilt was cast from molds taken from the original hero prop, and then hand-painted and weathered. This rarer version of the sword was the first design made during production, featuring a flat-bottomed pommel. Subsequent variants had a modified and rounded pommel for the comfort of actor Bernard Hill during use on set. This prop was part of a collection of authentic production-created movie props procured by official New Line Cinema licensee, United Cutlery, directly from Weta Workshop and Three Foot Six Productions between 1999-2004 fo
