A pair of light brown wigs custom made for Esther Williams in the biopic of Annette Kellerman The Million Dollar Mermaid also known as The One Piece Bathing Suit (MGM, 1952). The wigs are made of human hair and hand tied one strand of hair at a time to a lace mesh with silk bands in the interior to give the appearance of a scalp. Studio wigs at the time were custom made and fitted to measure by the star's head and hairline. The first wig has an MGM label that reads "704A," and the second has an MGM label inscribed "704B" with a corresponding MGM wig stock record card typed "704 A&B Esther Williams Lt. Brown 7/8 falls Prod. #1567." The card documents that the wigs were checked out on "7-27-65 production #2110 player Geanine Gray." Sydney Guilaroff was the hair stylist on this film. The wig was acquired from MGM upon the closure of its hair and wig department. Accompanied by a canvas wig block and a copy of the film. Categories: Esther Williams
