Denis Adeane Mitchell (English, 1912 - 1993), "Variations on a Theme"-1970, bronze sculpture, edition 1/9, inscribed on bottom of attached base "D. A.M. 1970 1/9 MS". Bronze sculpture of round form with convex front and concave back; front with three pierced circles aligned vertically whose sizes increase as they descend, such that the smallest circle is at top and the largest is at the bottom; the piercings are contained in an elongated ovoidal depression with green patinated bronze; from behind, patinated ovoidal depression is significantly smaller and less depressed; with attached black stone base. Approximate height with base 7.125", width 5.125", depth 2.6". Provenance: Marjorie Parr Gallery, London, whereby acquired by the Estate of Joseph Gilbert of Atlanta, Georgia on 9/26/1970. Copy of purchase receipt available upon request. Note: Denis Mitchell was a prominent figure in the St. Ives Modernists group, having worked in the studio of Barbara Hepworth (English, 1903-1975). Mitchell's work is in the permanent collections of the Tate Gallery, National Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia and the National Gallery of Wellington, New Zealand among other prominent institutions.
