A group of 35 vintage contact sheets of black and white photographs taken by LIFE photographer Lee Johnson in June 1967 at the Monterey Pop Festival, held at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in Monterey, California. Janis Joplin, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Jefferson Airplane, The Who, The Grateful Dead, The Byrds, Simon and Garfunkel, The Mamas & The Papas, Ravi Shankar, Otis Redding, and others performed at the festival. Johnson’s images show the fairgrounds crowded with festival attendees and some on-stage performances.
