A FRENCH ALLEGORICAL BRONZE BUST COMMEMORATING THE FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR, CAST AFTER A MODEL BY JEAN-LOUIS GREGOIRE (FRENCH 1840-1890) depicting France as a crowned woman draped with the French flag being attacked by the Prussian eagle, the cartouche at the base dated 1871, inscribed L. Gregoire,Susse Freres. Jean Louis Gregoire is known to have completed other examples of allegorical busts relating to the events of the Franco-Prussian conflict of 1870-1871. L'Alsace, also cast in 1871, depicts a grieving young girl wearing the French tricolor in her hair in tribute to the secession of Alsace and Lorraine to the Prussian victors. Categories: Cher
