A brown ostrich skin handbag containing a group of approximately 30 typed letters related to Christian Science, mostly signed a by fellow Christian Scientist “Allen. ” A slip of paper affixed to the front of purse reads in full: “Miss Pickford gave this brown bag to Esther Helm around 1970 and said it contained religious material that Miss Pickford took on all her trips and which Bessie Lewis read to her.” After the death of her mother Pickford found solace in converting from Catholicism to Christian Science. In 1934, she authored an inspirational book titled Why Not Try God? (1934), which blended Christian Science wisdom with her previous personal testimony in God, healing, and spirituality. 12 by 8 inches. PROVENANCE: From the Estate of Mary Pickford.
