MTV Video Music Award Moonman, dated 1991-1992, awarded to Nirvana for Best New Artist 1992 for "Smells Like Teen Spirit. " Nirvana's trip to the MTV Music Video Awards is notable for not only their acceptance speech but also for their performance of "Lithium." Toward the end of the song, members of the crowd began hopping on stage and stage diving signaling a start to the chaos. As the song nears its end Krist Novoselic throws his bass in the air which hits him on the head and knocks him on the ground. He exits the stage. Kurt attempts to break his guitar and then hops on top of the drum kit. While at the microphone Dave Grohl repeats "Hi Axl" to the audience. Nirvana beat out Cracker, Tori Amos and Arrested Development for their win and were presented their award jointly by the members of Wilson Phillips and Boyz II Men. Kurt took the microphone and began thanking people while Grohl encouraged the audience not to believe everything they read. Categories: Nirvana
