A Thomas Jefferson signed document appointing Lewis Heermann as a surgeon in the navy. The document is dated January 5, 1808. Four days earlier, Jefferson's law prohibiting the importation of slaves had gone into affect. The document is housed with reproduction images of Jefferson, the presidential seal, and a United States flag from that time.
