The Ludwig bass drumhead used on Ringo Starr's drum kit for The Beatles' February 9, 1964, debut performance on The Ed Sullivan Show . The television program was the first live glimpse Americans had of the band. Historically, it was the most important performance of The Beatles' careers. Beatlemania began in the United States that evening, permanently changing not only music but pop culture. This drumhead provided a title to what thousands of Americans were seeing. Aside from Ed Sullivan's famous introduction, only the drumhead with black ink against a white background gave a name to what viewers were witnessing on stage. The Remo Weather King head is painted with The Beatles "drop T" logo and "Ludwig." It is number two of seven Beatles "drop T" logo drumheads. It was painted by Edwin Stokes for The Beatles specifically for The Beatles' first trip to the United States. Starr didn't bring his entire drum kit from London to the United States; only a few pieces of his kit, along with this drumhead, were brought to the U.S. The head was placed on the bass drum that was part of Starr's second Ludwig oyster black pearl kit acquired in the United States for The Beatles' U.S. performances. Along with The Ed Sullivan Show filmed in New York, the head can also be seen during The Beatles' first concert in the United States at the Washington Coliseum, the band's performances at Carnegie Hall, and The Ed Sullivan Show performance broadcast live from the Deauvill Read more…
