A 1930s navy wool three-piece chalk stripe suit worn by Orson Welles in Citizen Kane (RKO Radio Pictures, 1941). The suit consists of a jacket with a notched lapel, three flap lower pockets, four-button front closure, Western Costume label inscribed “O. Welles,” internal W.C. Co. stamp and inscribed “48B, 1023287” in the sleeve; a vest with four pockets and six-button front closure, “Western 40174652, Size 48” and double stamped “Suit 3 pc 1930 and 1920”; and a pair of flat-front pants, button fly, and cuffed hem, Western Costume Company label shredded, inscribed in white “Char. 1023287 WCC 1920 Suit 3 Pc. K#31, 39X31.” Welles wore this suit in Kane's newspaper office in 1929, the start of the Great Depression. Due to the financial collapse, Kane, along with his former guardian, Foster, and business manager, Bernstein, is signing away full financial control of the newspaper but retaining creative control. Post-production alterations and restoration is present. A video interview with Gilberto Guzman, who worked with Welles in the Paramount tailor shop, is available upon request. Guzman explains and documents the alterations and restoration process. Seen here with a shirt and tie that are not original to the costume and are for display purposes only.
