A saddle and bridle commissioned by Johnny Weissmuller for his wife Lupe Vélez and made by Ed C. Gilmore. The black leather saddle is extensively tooled with a floral motif. The horn is tooled to read "Lupe." According to a letter that accompanies the saddle, it was purchased directly from Weissmuller. Weissmuller and Vélez divorced in 1939. Vélez tragically committed suicide in 1944. Gilmore, whose maker stamp appears on the top of the saddle, opened his North Hollywood saddle shop in the 1930s. Gilmore made saddles and rigs for many western movie stars and was well respected for his handiwork. His career was cut short when he was murdered in his store around 1940. Categories:
