From the edition of 100 published by the artist and Vitra International.

Much of Artschwager's work has dealt with the concepts of objects. His finely crafted opjects (he learned fine woodworking in the 1950s) challenge viewers by altering their accepted notion of what the object is or should do. Since the early 1960s, the artist has invented objects which combine reality with concept. About the chairs he has produced, Artschwager states, "Real chair and concept chair mashed together. So, fact and fancy in one." The Chair/Chair is especially dramatic due to its large scale and can easily seat two. Artschwager remains one of the most important artists of the 20th Century. Among the many solo shows devoted to his work was a major exhibition at the Whitney Museum in New York in 1988.
