USA, c. 1940 oil on canvas 44 w x 27 h in (112 x 69 cm)
signed lower left framed (fine contemporary gold leaf) In this very large work by the artist, he transforms this small town panarama into one of his finest modernist pictures. The horizontal orientation gives the piece the feeling of a mural. Groups of figures, spread throughout the canvas, create individual narratives within the larger composition. Like any committed American Scene modernist, Schwartz takes artistic liberties with perspective, color and form but relies on a real place to inspire the composition. A classic American Scene contrast is evident by the juxtaposition of the background factory with the peaceful waterside recreation.
