Cushion shaped in the form of a karabitsu (footed treasure coffer). Box and cover decorated with peacock feathers of tapered wires and foiled eyes, on celadon ground. Four pillar shaped legs with daisy and dotted brown decorations, ca. 1900. Unsigned, attributed to Kawade Shibataro. 6 3/4" x 4 7/8" x 3 7/8". Note: This box speaks to the relationship between Meiji decorative arts and French Art Nouveau. Provenance: Collection of Dora Jane Janson.
