Coles, Sr.; Note: One of the leading American art pottery decorators of his day, Valentien began painting wildflowers as a relaxing pastime. It soon turned into both his passion and second career. In 1908 philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps commissioned him and his wife to paint the entire California flora. The Valentiens promptly moved to Southern California and spent ten years on the project, which numbered almost 1,200 paintings and is now in the San Diego Natural History Museum’s collection.
