Gary Lee Navajo Sandpainting Finely crafted sand painting depicting a Native American man riding a horse in a snowy, mountainous landscape; signed to bottom right corner "Bluehorse"; triple matted in light grey, dark grey, and blue with geometric and arrow cutouts to top and middle matting; artist info and sandpainting info verso; measures approximately 18-1/2" square with painted wood frame and has a sight image of approximately 11-1/2" square. Sandpaintings originate from Navajo healing ceremonies. The medicine man builds a sandpainting and places the patient in the middle of it. To aid in the healing process, sand from the painting is rubbed over certain parts of the patient's body. When the ceremony is over, the sandpainting is destroyed, thereby destroying the illness. This Navajo symbol of healing is now appreciated as a work of art. Native American artist Gary Lee was born February 2, 1957 in Phoenix, AZ and is a member of the Navajo Tribe.
