Joshua Tolford (American 1910-1985) "Dogtown Common"-1939. Oil on canvas painting depicting a scenic landscape with tall evergreens and orange leaved trees and bushes turning as winter approaches in a hilly landscape with a muted blue sky. Signed lower right "JOSHUA TOLFORD". Inscribed on back "#1 WPA 1939 JOSHUA TOLFORD DOGTOWN COMMON 25-30 DEC.1939" and with Blanchet, Paris canvas stamp. Framed 32.25" x 37.5". Unframed 25.25" x 30". Tolford was a significant member of the Rockport/Gloucester/Cape Ann art colony and was a juried member of the Rockport Art Association from 1941-1958. He also served as an artist for the Works Progress Administration throughout the 1940s and later was regarded for his work in book illustration.
