Vernon, Dai. Dai Vernon's Custom Printed Butterfly Paper Tear. Designed and printed by Paul Fox on stock identical to that which many Bibles are printed, this long, large strip of paper was designed and used by Vernon for a torn-and-restored effect. Two sheets, 7 x 24", affixed to each other back-to-back and printed with black, red, green and orange butterflies. Ca. 1930. Central crease to both sheets, otherwise good condition. This paper tear was the inspiration for and precursor to Vernon's famous Wintertime in China effect used in his Harlequin Act. At one time, Vernon planned on producing live butterflies in his performance. Paul Fox used a similarly designed paper for his own torn-and-restored effect.
