Server Karakuri mechanical doll/automaton. Tokyo, Gakken, ca. 2004. Designed during the Edo period (1603-1867), the mechanics that make this recreation karakuri doll function are precise and complex. Karakuri refers to the mechanisms that make a machine function. Wind-up doll approaches with a full teacup on a tray; it stops walking when the teacup is taken, waits, and then turns and walks away with the empty teacup on its tray. Complete with custom wooden carrying case. As new.
