Indian, first half 20th century. "Vishnu with Gopi and Sacred Cows", hand painted textile, apparently unsigned. Painting depicting a figural grouping in a garden setting with four dancing gopis in traditional dress along with one seated woman all surrounding a central figure, the Indian god Krishna in the form of Shrinathji who is set below a flower adorned trestle, the deity with black skin and wearing flaring dress, long necklace, and many jewels to arms and ankles, with a lotus blossom extending off the left shoulder and with his left hand raised and the right hand made into a fist resting at the waist, with a chibuk or large diamond placed beneath his lips, the scene with many rows of bejeweled cows to front of scene and also being bordered by a band of square cartouches holding a repeated figural scene depicting the deity blessing two figures, the piece entirely surrounded by a band of floral sprays. Verso of textile with allover printed floral patterning. Framed approximately 64.75" x 46.5", unframed approximately 62.75" x 44.75".
