Sold for:
$5,000

Spanish (Andalusia), circa 10th century. An Ummayad carved and drilled white marble column capital likely from Córdoba during the reign of Abd-al-Rahman (912-961) Or Al-Hakam II (961-976), the capital of typical form derived from the classical Roman Corinthian style with remnants of scrolls to each corner flanking high relief floral motifs. Approximate height 14.5", width approximately 15.25" square. Provenance: Property of the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia. Note: Three comparable capitals in the Museo Arqueologico Provincial de Cordoba, attributed to Cordoba or Madinat al-Zahra, illustrate the evolution of this type of capital in Umayyad Spain during the reigns of Abd al-Rahman III and al-Hakam II, this example almost certainly being from the later reign due to the overall lacey appearance of the decoration seen also on other Byzantine examples of Umayyad capitals from this period.
