Lyonel Feininger (German/ American, 1871-1956). "Hafen (mit Schiffen und Mannern am Quai) [Harbor (With Ships, and Men on Wharf)] - c.1919, woodcut on oatmeal-tan carbon-copy paper, pencil signed lower left margin, pencil titled lower right margin in German. One of two known proofs for the apparently unpublished woodblock print, the other on Japanese laid paper. Expressionist print depicting several blocky figures standing on a wharf looking out upon water filled with boats bearing portholes and tall masts, the bank to opposite side of water with peaked roof structures, the composition filled with bold and striking vertical lines of the figure and object countered by short and choppy horizontal lines of the ocean and sky. Lower right of sheet with vertically oriented stamp reading "FEININGER ESTATE" over "G W No. 732", and below that a horizontal handwritten inscription "1950".
