After Robert Walker (British, 1599-1658) Portrait of Oliver Cromwell Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 30 1/4 x 25 1/4 in. (77.0 x 64.5 cm), framed. Condition: Canvas with vertical seam, strip lined, retouch, fine craquelure, varnish inconsistencies, small abrasions near edges. N.B. Robert Walker was one of the major visual chroniclers of Oliver Cromwell. However, the National Gallery in London records that no certain ad vivum portrait of Cromwell by Walker is known. The work at hand seems to be a later, abbreviated copy based on Walker's popular portrait of Cromwell which, at full size, included a page on the left tying on Cromwell's sash. Provenance: The estate of George Way. Estimate $400-600 Retouch above the sitter's right eye and under his chin, with a few small areas along the edges of the canvas. Work is fairly thinly painted. In some areas the original canvas texture is visible under close examination. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging. Any condition statement given, as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Skinner shall have no responsibility for any error or omission.
