Openwork Stone Carving of a Pomander Ball, China, with a cover with a metal ring finial, decorated with reticulated floral roundels and foliate scrolls, celadon stone with hint of russet, overall ht. 2 3/8, ball dia. 2 in. Provenance: Descended in the family of Dr. Marshall Hertig, an internationally noted medical entomologist who conducted research on disease bearing insects at the Peking Union Medical College, from 1923-1928, his wife Edwina Smiley Hertig, and their son Bruce Allerton Hertig to the present owner.
