An Incurable Collector, these items represent Gordon Lankton's passion for the culture and history of Africa. This sale represents the conclusion of the Gordon Lankton Collection of African Art. There are over 575 individual pieces in this lot, representing a wide variety of object types and tribal groups from sub-Saharan Africa. The collection holds a number of large scale standing figures, mostly ancestor and fetish types both male and female, some as large as four feet in height. There are many smaller mostly freestanding figures of which some are highly decorated and adorned. Face and helmet masks, maskettes, African drums, and many handmade brass animals and figurals are included. Contemporary items include a whimsical group metal toys and figures. Most artifacts come from tribal groups in West Africa, including Mali, the Ivory Coast, Gabon, Burkina Faso, and Nigeria. The Congo, including the Songye and Lega tribes, are also represented.
