Harrison Cady (American, 1877-1970) The Wounded Whale Signed "HARRISON CADY" l. l., titled on a fragmentary inscription formerly attached to the frame backing paper. Oil on Masonite, 25 x 30 in. (63.5 x 76.5 cm), framed. Condition: Small abrasion to l.l. quadrant, scattered minor surface imperfections or accretions, minor surface grime. Provenance: Private Massachusetts collection. N.B. An artist and illustrator, most notably for children's books, Harrison Cady spent his summers in Rockport and was a founding member of the Rockport Art Association in 1921. The distinctive round building Cady used as his summer studio sits on Atlantic Avenue, and offered a bird's-eye view of the harbor that Cady depicts in this scene. Estimate $5,000-7,000 Framed dimensions are 29 1/4 x 34 x 1 1/4 in. Label from Newbury Galleries, Boston, on the frame backing paper. Work in inscribed "27 W 67" and "A" in white chalk on the reverse. Staining to the reverse of the Masonite. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
