Edward T. Hurley (1869-1950) for Rookwood Pottery Sea Green Glaze Vase, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1901, carved, hand-painted, and glazed stoneware, depicting a school of fish swimming in whitewater, marked with impressed RP flame, roman numeral "I," shape "922C," decorator initials "ETH," and glaze "G," ht. 8 1/4, dia. 4 1/2 in. Note: Hurley was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and studied at Xavier University and the Cincinnati Art Academy (1894-1898) under Otto Beck and etcher Frank Duveneck. Hurley was a member of the Cincinnati Society of Etchers, Ohio Print Makers, the Duveneck Society, The Crafters, and other artists' societies. Like a number of other Cincinnati artists of the time, Hurley worked as a designer for Rookwood Pottery (1896-198). He received a gold medal for his work at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904. This example is similar in design to an example in the Smithsonian's Cooper Hewitt Museum. Estimate $7,000-9,000 Very good to excellent condition. No chips, cracks or visible signs of repair.
