Eva Zeisel (Hungarian/American, 1906-2011) for Castleton China Seventy-piece Museum Dinner Service, New Castle, Pennsylvania, designed 1942-43, mid to late 20th century, porcelain, marked "Castleton China, Made in U. S.A.," ten dinner plates, dia. 10 1/2, eleven soup plates, dia. 8, eleven square plates, 8 1/4 x 8 1/4, twelve cups, eleven saucers, dia, 6 1/2, eleven salad/dessert plates, dia. 6, coffeepot, ht. 10, creamer, ht. 5 1/4, oval serving bowl, lg. 11, and round covered serving bowl, dia. 9 3/4 in. Note: Organic modern tableware was an important element of any American home concerned with good design in the mid-twentieth century. Zeisel designed the elegantly sculptural Museum Dinner Service in consultation with Castleton China and MoMA, which promoted it as "the first translucent china dinnerware, modern in shape, to be produced in the United States." - MoMA Estimate $2,000-3,000 Oval serving bowl with repair to rim and hairline.
