American Clavichord, John Challis, Ypsilanti, 1936, serial no. 36-16, unfretted, double-strung, the nameboard inscribed JOHN CHALLIS YPSILANTI MICHIGAN, the lid inscribed MVSICA LÆTITIÆ COMES/MEDICINA DOLORVM, the spruce soundboard decorated with floral motif and signed John Challis, with stand and tuning wrench. Provenance: Bessie Dixon Lidbury (1879-1981); by descent through the family. Letter: John Challis, 1949. Estimate $1,000-1,500 Out of tune.
