Paint-decorated Pine Fireboard, attributed to Rufus Porter (1792-1884), c. 1825, with breadboard ends, painted with a sunset river landscape with a three-masted vessel, 35 x 46 in. Provenance: Sam Herrup; Burton and Helaine Fendelman; Sotheby's, The American Folk Art Collection of Burton and Helaine Fendelman, October, 1993, Lot 81; Stephen Score. Note: This fireboard bears a strong resemblance to a fireboard known to have been removed from the James T. Garvin House, Greenfield, New Hampshire, and also attributed to Porter. Estimate $6,000-8,000 old repaint removed, conservation done by Michael Heslip, Williamstown, MA Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
