Kurt Roesch (American/German 1904-1984) Cocktail Party II. Signed l.l., alternatively titled and dated "Judgement of Paris/1952" on a label from Curt Valentin Gallery on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 50 x 42 in., framed. Condition: Surface grime, minor losses to paint near edges. Provenance: The estate of Lois Smiley. Smiley was born in New York, where she eventually studied with Rufino Tamayo and Vaclav Vytlacil. She also studied with Kurt Roesch and they exhibited together at the Curt Valentin Gallery. Her artwork followed in their traditions of abstract expressionism with a focus on figural and landscape painting. She taught drawing and painting in New York and later in the Boston area.
