Reverend Meekly Obstinate Pious vs. the Fegee Islanders. [England, mid-19th century]. Oblong folio, consisting of fourteen satirical watercolors relating the story of Meekly Obstinate Pious of Oxford, who travels to Fiji as a missionary and meets an unfortunate end at the hands of his cannibalistic would-be converts, told in graphic detail with disturbingly racist depictions of the native Fijians; each leaf with a large watercolor and several lines of narrative text; each re-mounted on heavy paper, edges of some mounts chipped, later half-leather boards, both detached, disbound, sewing failed, each page loose, 11 3/4 x 8 3/4 in. [together with] Patrick Brantlinger's Taming Cannibals: Race and the Victorians, Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 2019, in paperback.
