Vandewater, Robert J. (fl. circa 1830) The Tourist, or Pocket Manual for Travellers on the Hudson River, the Western Canal, and Stage Road; Comprising also the Routes to Lebanon, Ballston, and Saratoga Springs. New York: J. & J. Harper, 1830; New York: Ludwig & Tolefree, 1831; [and] New York: Harper & Brothers, 1834. Three copies of this title, in first, second, and third editions, each 16mo, with folding frontispiece maps, all in contemporary boards, first two editions in publisher's contemporary half cloth and paper boards with printed labels on the front boards (boards detached), the third edition in full publisher's cloth with publisher's label on front board, some spotting and foxing, each approximately 6 x 3 3/4 in. (3) Vandewater operated packet boats that cruised the Hudson River from Manhattan up to Oswego and out to the Erie Canal and Saratoga Springs in the 1830s and 40s, promoting early domestic tourism.
