Twain, Mark (1835-1910) and Olivia Langdon Clemens (1845-1904) Two Autograph Letters Signed, 28 August, [1901? ] Ampersand, New York. Twain's letter on a single sheet of paper, signed S.L. Clemens; Olivia's on black-edged mourning letter paper with 14 West 10th Street address crossed out, replaced with "Ampersand, New York," to a Mr. Sylvester, thanking him for sending a book, noting that they are at Saranac Lake, and that Mr. Clemens is away, she expects the book will delight him, "He is very fond of what he calls 'hogwash literature,'" and noting "the cordial things you say of Mr. Clemens' writings and most of all I am pleased that you like him not when he is serious."; Twain's letter, to the same addressee on the same subject, "Yes, it is my habit to be serious--it is one which few people in this world can escape. Indeed I have thoroughly enjoyed that little book, & although my wife has already thanked you for it, I wish to do so too. (I made a little mistake up there, & had to correct it.)."
