Carroll, Lewis, (1832-1898) illus. Gladys Peto (1890-1977) Alice in Wonderland Handkerchiefs, c. 1930. Eight Irish cotton handkerchiefs printed in color depicting different scenes in the story after designs by Peto, each mounted on a sheet of wove paper, the whole stapled together as issued, with a brightly colored chromolithographic front cover (detached), 10 x 10 in. overall, each handkerchief 9 x 9 in. Peto's handkerchiefs depict the following scenes: "Will you? Won't you? Join the Dance?"; "The Trial and the Awakening"; The Queen's Croquet Ground; The Mad Hatter's Tea Party; The Dodo and the Caucus Race; The Cheshire Cat and the Duchess; The White Rabbit's House; and Old Father William and the Caterpillar.
