Caribbean Cup Hilt Rapier, c. mid-17th century, iron hilt, quillons, cup, and teardrop-form pommel, finely woven wire grip with brass ferrules, long double-edged blade with a central fuller, blade lg. 41, overall lg. 48 in. Provenance: Rodney Hilton Brown Collection; The War Museum. Note: For other examples see Spanish Military Weapons in Colonial America, 1700-1821, by Sidney B. Brinckerhoff and Pierce A. Chamberlain (Harrisburg, PA: Stackpole Books, 1972); a precisely similar example in the Arizona Historical Society Collection, Tucson, Arizona. Estimate $1,500-2,500 Hilt is a plum/brown color.
