Burt & Watson Vernier Compass and Field Book, Detroit, Michigan, no. 81, lacquered brass instrument with 6-in. dia. engraved dial reading "Burt & Watson/Makers/Detroit, Mich/no. 81," with fleur-de-lis representing north, blued-steel needle with needle lifter on underside, dual spirit levels, vernier fine adjustment knob, sighting vanes, tripod mount, and a leather-bound field book. Note: Burt and Watson were in business from 1857 to 1858. Watson was foreman in Young's shop prior to moving to Detroit, and later became a partner in the Young & Sons firm.
